At ROC E6, focus is on the student’s success leading up to grade 8, so that children have the knowledge, character and self esteem to make it through the tenuous high school years successfully. By focusing on the six goals below, ROC E6 is instrumental in ensuring that students in the program graduate from high school and more importantly, have the necessary skills and motivation to further their education and become positive members of society.
Education:
Through classroom instruction teachers educate and prepare children for their proper grade level in Math and ELA. Students are given NYS tests in Math and ELA at the beginning and end of camp to track the progress of each student. Homework is also given daily and graded to assess overall understanding of the coursework. Exercise: Encourage exercise and healthy eating to counteract obesity. Students actively participate in daily sports and exercise. They are given physical fitness tests throughout camp to track their physical well being.
Ethics:
Instill ethical behavior in students. Through positive role models, ethics training and character building activities, students are taught how to modify their behavior and change their thinking processes to make positive life decisions.
Equality:
Address racial equality in academics, economics and athletics. Through intense dialogue and debates, students realize that equality can be achieved and that they play a significant role in their future success. Students are given research tasks and work in group settings for a year end debate on a significant community issue. Progress is tracked through year end evaluation forms given to each student as well as parents.
Empowerment:
Empower students to gain self esteem and set meaningful goals for themselves. Through successful completion of the camp’s Ethics program, individual counseling and a unique sports program, students will realize the value of their role in society and make positive decisions regarding their futures. A year end assessment is completed by for each student through a survey entitled Dream Big in which students create realistic goals for their future.
Exposure:
Expose children to uncommon activities and sports. Allowing children to experience new and uncommon sports and activities such as Red Wing Games broaden their perspective and encourage positive behavior.
2007 Results:
Through parental participation, ROC E6 has tracked the progress of 27 students during the 2007-2008 school year:
